Memorial Day is Monday, May 29, and Jefferson County’s veterans’ organizations have announced their plans to honor their fallen comrades at the following services:
At Valley Falls— Commander Jerry Tullis and members of the Grahem-Herbers Post No. 3084 and Kay Gibbens, auxiliary president, and members of the VFW Auxiliary will conduct services at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, near the flagpole at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Auxiliary and VFW members will lay wreaths on the Soldiers’ Memorial. An Avenue of Flags will greet visitors at the cemetery and flags will be flown on Broadway Street as well.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the east gym at Valley Falls High School.
Members of the Grahem-Herbers Post will also place flags at the graves of soldiers at these four cemeteries: Valley Falls, Saint Mary’s, Coal Creek, and Gragg’s Chapel.
At Winchester— Judy Scott, of the Davis-Gibson American Legion and Auxiliary No. 387, advises that she and volunteers will place flags on graves Wednesday, May 24, at six cemeteries: Plum Grove, Winchester Reformed Presbyterian Church, Winchester (Wise), Corpus Christi (Mooney Creek), Hull Grove, and Spring Grove.

On Saturday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to noon, the Legion and its auxiliary will sponsor a bake sale at the Kendall Bank parking lot. Poppies will be distributed.
On Monday, May 29, the Reformed Presbyterian Church will be serving a casserole lunch with vegetables, salads, assorted pies, and drinks from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for anyone visiting graves. A free-will donation will be taken. There will be carry-out and some dine-in available.
At Oskaloosa, Ozawkie, Meriden, Winchester, and McLouth —
The American Legion Posts, Larner-Segraves Post 36, Oskaloosa, Davis-Gibson Post 387, Winchester, and Bi-Centennial Post 225, Ozawkie, will officiate at the Memorial Day services at the following cemeteries Monday, May 29:
8:30 a.m., Ozawkie Cemetery; 9:10 a.m., Meriden City Cemetery; 9:30 a.m., Meriden St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery; 10:30 a.m., Winchester Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery; 11:10 a.m., McLouth City Cemetery; 11:55 a.m., Oskaloosa Pleasant View Cemetery; Noon, Raising of the flag and prayer with devotion.
The American Legion asks that if any veteran’s grave is unmarked, to please let them know so they might update their maps. They will need the name and approximate location of the gravesite.
At Perry— Following is the schedule of services Monday, May 29, by the American Legion, Post 142, Perry:
9 a.m., Maple Grove Cemetery; 9:30 a.m., Underwood Cemetery; 10 a.m., Buster Cemetery; 10:30 a.m., Oak Ridge Cemetery; 11 a.m., Mount Calvary-Rose Hill Cemetery; and 11:30 a.m., Grantville Cemetery.
Guest speaker for the services will be Gus Barnett.
Following will be a covered dish dinner at noon with everyone invited at the Perry American Legion.
Post commander is Chris Reynolds, and vice-commander is John Butler.
Fowler Cemetery, also known as Round Grove Cemetery, northeast of McLouth along 106th Street, will hold a service at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, and Wildhorse Cemetery, also known as Union Cemetery, located southeast of McLouth along 74th Street, will hold a service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 28.
At Oskaloosa— Sunday, May 28, at 2 p.m. at Old Jefferson Town, an event is planned to remember those soldiers from Jefferson County who were killed during past wars. The event is sponsored by the Jefferson County Historical Society.
The names of the honored soldiers will be read reminding us of those soldiers that perished during the Civil War Era, World War I, World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Spanish American, Desert Storm, and Iraq wars. The bell will be rung from time to time.
These soldiers were killed in action, died later of war injuries, or from diseases acquired during their enlistment in the war period.
Everyone is invited.
